If you have not married but have been living together with your former partner for a period of time then you may be viewed as being in a de-facto relationship.
A de-facto relationship is a relationship where you are not married but live together in a marriage-like relationship.
Same sex relationships are also considered as de-facto relationships.
To become separated you do not need to file any documents to terminate the relationship. However, if you want to legally divide your assets you will need to complete and file documents through the Family Court. This must be done before you are separated for more than 2 years.
